EM Aviation Participates in the 2nd Edition of Aviation Week Africa

The 2nd edition of Aviation Week Africa took place from April 2–5, 2025, at the stunning David Livingstone Safari Lodge in Livingstone, Zambia. Representing EM Aviation at this prestigious gathering was CEO Mr. Enos Mutyavaviri, who joined industry peers in discussing the future of African aviation.

Held under the theme “Sustaining Aviation in Africa through Collaboration & Innovation,” this year’s event marked a major milestone in advancing the continent’s aviation sector. The summit attracted key stakeholders including government officials, industry leaders, innovators, and policymakers—all focused on identifying and solving the unique challenges facing aviation in Africa.

Event Highlights

Opening Ceremony

The event officially opened with remarks from the Honourable Rodney Sikumba, Zambia’s Minister of Tourism, and the Honourable Frank Museba Tayali, Minister of Transport and Logistics, who served as the guest of honour. Both ministers emphasized the importance of collaboration between the public and private sectors to drive sustainable growth across Africa’s aviation landscape.

Exhibition & Air Show

Held at Harry Mwaanga Nkumbula International Airport, the air show featured impressive aerial displays by the Zambian Air Force, showcasing their Leonardo SF-260 training aircraft, along with other demonstrations from private operators. The show was open to the public, offering attendees an engaging and educational experience, as well as the opportunity to interact directly with aviation professionals.

High-Level Summit Discussions

Throughout the week, panels and roundtable discussions focused on:

  • Sustainability in aviation
  • Infrastructure development
  • Affordability of air travel
  • Regional integration

A key theme was the urgent call for African states to implement the Single African Air Transport Market (SAATM)—particularly the need to remove market access restrictions, liberalize flight routes, and improve intra-country air connectivity. Speakers also urged airlines to connect underserved regions within their own countries to expand accessibility.

Youth and Women Empowerment

A standout element of the event was its focus on inclusivity. Dedicated panels explored ways to empower youth and women in aviation, with calls for improved access to internships, mentorship programs, and employment opportunities. Young professionals voiced their desire to actively participate in shaping the present and future of the industry.

Awards & Recognition

During the elegant Gala Dinner at the Radisson Blu Livingstone, several industry leaders and organizations were honoured for their contributions:

  • Outstanding Achievement Award
Awarded to Mr. Aaron Munetsi, CEO of the Airlines Association of Southern Africa, in recognition of over 30 years of dedicated service to African aviation.
  • African Civil Aviation Authority of the Year
Presented to the Namibia Civil Aviation Authority for their exceptional performance, reflected in a 72.3% ICAO USOAP audit score in 2024. Notably, the Zambia Civil Aviation Authority, as runner-up, achieved a 73.4% score, both exceeding global and regional averages.
  • African Low-Cost Carrier of the Year
Fastjet Zimbabwe was recognized for a decade of successful operations from Robert Mugabe International Airport. The airline marked the occasion by launching a new bi-weekly service between Harare and Lusaka the following week.
